February 2010 – Complementary Partners, A Marriage of Colors

Colors to use: Magenta and Green

Block Name: Bachelor's Puzzle – www.quilterscache.com (click for block instructions – be sure to read all the pages) ***NOTE: All blocks will be twelve inches square when sewn into the quilt top, and so, should measure twelve and one half inches square when you turn them in.

Colors to use: Magenta and Green

Colors that lie opposite each other on the Ives Color Wheel complement each other extremely well, and are especially beautiful together. When two opposite colors are used together it is called a "complementary" color scheme. A way to really dramatize a complementary scheme is to use a wide variety of pure colors, tints, shades, and tones of one or both color choices. It is important that you use the exact opposite of the color you choose to use for a very stunning block. Also, you need to choose one dominant partner when choosing your complementary colors. Do NOT allow both colors to have equal visual power. When there is no dominant color, the viewers eye jumps from one spot to another, not knowing where to rest. This causes an uncomfortable feeling and your quilt will be disappointing. This month magenta will be the dominant color with green as its compliment. This should be a very pretty block and appropriate for February.
