March 2010 – Analogous Color Harmony

Colors to use: Yellow = Main Color

Block Name: Birds In The Air – www.quilterscache.com (click for block instructions – be sure to read all the pages) ***NOTE: All blocks will be twelve inches square when sewn into the quilt top, and so, should measure twelve and one half inches square when you turn them in.

An analogous color plan is very harmonious and appealing to the eye and therefore is the most popular color scheme for quilters. An analogous color plan is whenever colors lying side by side on the color wheel are used in a design. For the best results use three, five, or seven analogous colors. The color range should always be less than one-third of the color wheel. The Ives Color Wheel has 24 colors so seven colors is the max you would use in an analogous color design. If you prefer a quieter quilt use only three analogous colors, to increase drama and the wow effect go for seven. You can vary the tints, tones and shades to create some very stunning quilts. Choose a color on the color wheel and then pick one, two or three of the colors to either side of your main color choice. This months block you will select yellow as your main color choice, then you decide which analogous scheme to work with, have fun with this creative block.
