April 2010 – Using a Split-Complementary Color Scheme

Colors to use: Blue and Orange-yellow

Block Name: Crown of Thorns 2 – www.quilterscache.com (click for block instructions – be sure to read all the pages) ***NOTE: All blocks will be twelve inches square when sewn into the quilt top, and so, should measure twelve and one half inches square when you turn them in.

This scheme combines the analogous and the complementary color scheme to create some very beautiful color effects. The appeal of this plan is the natural temperature change which enhances the design. In a split-complimentary plan, the complement (the temperature-shifting color) always lies opposite the middle of the analogous color. The analogous color band is usually comprised of three or five colors. If you are working with cool analogous hues, the complement will be warm. If you are using warm analgous colors, the complementary color will be cool. Select one color family to play a dominant role and another to take a secondary position. The remaining colors should be used as accents. For this months block we will be using blue as the split-complimentary color and orange-yellow as the complimentary color for temperature change. Have fun with this one.
