September 2009 – Shades, and Their Dual Personality

Colors to use: Shades of Gold

Block Name: Arbor Window – www.quilterscache.com (click for block instructions – be sure to read all the pages) ***NOTE: All blocks will be twelve inches square when sewn into the quilt top, and so, should measure twelve and one half inches square when you turn them in.

Shades are created by adding black to a pure color. The more black that is added, the darker the color becomes. For example, a slightly blackened red becomes a reddish rust. As black is added, the colors become varying hues of rich brown. The best neutral for shades is black because all shades have black in their coloring. Shades have two very different personalities: warm and cool. Shaded colors such as yellow, gold, orange, and red create a warm feeling in a quilt. Shaded blues, greens, and violets create a cooling affect. Often the word "dark" or "deep" precedes the cool shade names such as, dark blue, or deep violet. We will be selecting from shades of yellow or shades of golden yellow to create the block "Arbor Window". With the right color selection this block should be stunning and it is so simple to make.
