October 2009 – Tones and Their Subtle Hues

Colors to use: Tones of Red and Orange

Block Name: All Hallows Variation – www.quilterscache.com (click for block instructions – be sure to read all the pages) ***NOTE: All blocks will be twelve inches square when sewn into the quilt top, and so, should measure twelve and one half inches square when you turn them in.

Any color that has been grayed (a combination of both white and black)is a tone of the pure color. We can see many wonderful examples of tones in nature, such as, mist, fog, rainy days. Tones are used in quilting designs to create a subtle calming, and peaceful effect. Toned colors are also great to use for children's quilts because they usually do not cause visual stimulation. There are more colors in the tone scle than in any other scale because every pure color, tint, and shade can be grayed or toned. A winter landscape is a beautiful example of colors subdued by an overlall grayness. In this months block we are going to be using what we otherwise would consider vibrant colors and selecting tones of reds and oranges. Let's see how quiet and peaceful we can make this block.
