November 2009 – The Value of Color

Colors to use: High and low values, shades and tones of Purple and Yellow-green

Block Name: Cat and Mice – www.quilterscache.com (click for block instructions – be sure to read all the pages) ***NOTE: All blocks will be twelve inches square when sewn into the quilt top, and so, should measure twelve and one half inches square when you turn them in.

The value of color is its lightness or darkness. Many of us are very sensitive to the affects of light on our personality moods and emotions. How light or dark we choose our quilting designs to be is as important as our color choices. Colors close to white are "high" in value, they seem light and delicate. If you love the gentle high-value colors make sure you also use some middle-value colors otherwise your block pattern will fade out. Colors close to black are low in value and they incorporate deep and rich colors. If you want your quilt design to be outstanding but love the rich low-value colors you will need to include some of the middle or high value colors as well. This months block we will be using high and low values of shades, tints, and tones of purples and yellow greens. Have fun and happy quilting.
