December 2009 – Changing a Color's Temperature

Colors to use: Violet Red and Violet

Block Name: Cedars of Lebanon – www.quilterscache.com (click for block instructions – be sure to read all the pages) ***NOTE: All blocks will be twelve inches square when sewn into the quilt top, and so, should measure twelve and one half inches square when you turn them in.

One color can suggest feelings of both warmth or coolness, depending on the colors that surround it. By changing adjacent colors you can make any color appear cool or warm. Colors are fluid and you have the power to change their temperature through you choices of neighboring fabrics. If you want warm hues to appear even warmer place them next to cool colors. If you want to inhance cool colors place them next to warm colors. Nature does this beautifully in both sunrises and sunsets. Watch them and you will begin to notice how both warm and cool colors play off of each other. This month use the Christmas colors of violet reds, and violets and see if your block appears warm or cool. Have fun!
